As a Senior Optical Engineer, you will lead a team that is responsible for evaluating and integrating our core technology into customer products across diverse applications. You will develop innovative displays and optoelectronic devices leveraging our groundbreaking metamaterial lens technology. You will work in close collaboration with the product development team to test prototype hardware in optical assemblies and execute the design of experiments.

You are someone who thrives on innovation and seeing your ideas come to life. You rise to tough challenges, even if they fall outside your primary area of expertise. You excel in a fast-paced, small-team environment. You are uncommonly resourceful in accomplishing your goals. You can work collaboratively across disciplines to integrate product requirements from multiple perspectives.

This is a full-time position consisting of a minimum 40-hour work-week on-site in Fremont, CA.

Work Description

As a core Engineering team member, the Senior Optical Engineer will drive the design, evaluation, and implementation of complex optical architectures showcasing our revolutionary metamaterial lenses. You will be principally responsible for defining the optical and opto-mechanical designs and benchmarking their performance to drive improvements at the component and system level. The Senior Optical Engineer will collaborate with a talented team of engineers and scientists to test and characterize cutting-edge optical devices. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and capable engineering leader to gain expertise in the growing field of optical metasurfaces and advanced display systems.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and implement experimental optical setups to evaluate the as-fabricated performance of prototype and production lenses in the lab.

  • Design and develop optical systems for specific customer applications. Collaborate with leadership to define product targets and specifications.

  • Work closely with the nanofabrication engineers to define performance criteria and implement improvements to existing processes.

  • Interface with the rest of the product development team to complete systems modeling, analysis and methods of performance verification.

  • Document, analyze, and report test data from optical experiments. Participate in the technical exchange and communication with customers, partners and vendors.

  • Generate, document, and follow experimental procedures and protocols. Prepare and review test plans, acceptance test procedures, and first article test procedures.

  • Determine and assess the contribution of opto-mechanical and electro-optical error sources to predict performance in the laboratory as well as in customer applications.

  • Participate in the recruiting of new engineering team candidates, team member evaluations, management and decision-making regarding lab facilities and processes.

EXPERIENCE

  • 5+ years of experience in optical design and experiments (e.g., free space optics, optical systems design, illumination systems, imaging systems, optical characterization, etc.)

  • Demonstrated track record of bringing novel optical systems from concept through to production.

  • Solid fundamentals of understanding optical theory, measurements and equipment.

  • Proficient with Optical Design Software and methods of optical design & analysis.

  • Strong engineering background in classical linear optics including wave optics (diffraction, interference, scattering), geometric optics, and/or lens design.

  • Strong understanding of ray optics, diffraction, and imaging system metrics.

  • Strong interpersonal and technical communication skills in English.

  • Creative/analytical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and creative problem-solving skills.

  • Able to thrive in a small team/startup environment, comfortable with ambiguity, able to learn on the job and adapt quickly

  • Self-starter, work well with autonomy, able to manage your own time efficiently
